The Reaction Animorphs No 12 KA Applegate 9780590997348 Books

Plot:

I like that the plot of this one is much more different than in the other books. In this one, Rachel starts having trouble with her morphs, trouble that could end up putting her and her friends in danger.

Setting:

The setting is still in the same town the kids live in like in all the other books, but we get to see some new places--a zoo, the stage of a television station, a yacht out on the sea.

Characters:

I've always liked Rachel's POV, but it was nice to see a more vulnerable side to her in this book. I liked Jake a little less in this one even though I knew where he was coming from. Marco had some hilarious lines. And of course, I love Cassie, Tobias, and Ax.

Relationships:

The relationships for the most part stay the same like in the previous books, although there is some friction between Rachel and her cousin, Jake. I feel that Cassie and Rachel's friendship really shines in this one.

Writing/Voice:

Despite the subject matter, this book seemed to have a more humorous tone to it than the others. There were a few parts that made me laugh.

Ending:

It wrapped up well.

Overall:

One of the better ones I've read so far.

The Reaction Animorphs No 12 KA Applegate 9780590997348 Books Reviews

The repeated basic exposition of the series didn't seem too stale, there was also a good spin on the dilemma of using morhping for other purposes.

The crocodile pit and ignoring the allergic reaction are two great examples of Rachel's recklessness being a problem.

The Jeremy Jason McCole riffing was an excellent combo of comic relief and plot advancement - KAA does that kind of thing well.

That's also a great example of how Strong Female Characters can still be feminine. Rachel is often like that and here's a bit of Cassie being like that. Sometimes attempts to write good female characters miss that point - they can be both, girly stuff isn't necessarily bad, etc. In general, I feel that writers shouldn't overuse steretypes, but it's unrealistic to ignore those traits entirely.

The Chapman scene was a great blend of him as a Yeerk and him maintaining the vice principal act. Stress from the divorce made sense as a non-Yeerk-related cover story. I didn't expect her to get away from Chapman - I figure a Controller of all people would find the feet suspicious. Well, the series has a lot of seemingly improbable luck like that.

The end was delicious chaos, but I'm not sure how they got out of this either, and with the Yeerk invasion remaining non-public.
Haha, Rachel's "allergic" to crocodile DNA. I thought the whole concept was kinda goofy--especially that they have to basically barf the animal out of their system if it doesn't agree with them--but it kinda bothered me also that nobody else ever had this kind of reaction. It did amuse me that Ms. Applegate thought of the idea. And the way they covered it up and dealt with Rachel freaking out was really good.

Notable moments and inconsistencies

This book had dated passages almost immediately. First, Cassie talks about buying a CD because Marco wanted to "make a tape." Second, she rattled off popular bands that her mother mixes up, naming Nine Inch Nails, the Fugees, Snoop Doggy Dog, and Boyz II Men. Not all of these folks were still recording ten years later, so kids who read them when they weren't in their prime wouldn't get these references. It's also a bit amusing that this book's made up celebrity, Jeremy Jason McCole, is so very popular that there must be twenty websites just about him. Twenty? Wow, must be a popular guy!

And speaking of Jeremy Jason McCole, he appears to be a parody of Jonathan Taylor Thomas; the fictional celebrity is on a show called Power House, while the real star was on Home Improvement. Both had a "comedian guy who played his father" as well.

And Barry and Cindy Sue are obviously supposed to be Regis and Kathie Lee.

Ax recognizes a morph Visser Three uses as a Lebtin javelin fish. We don't know what "Lebtin" is, but Ax is excited about getting to see it even though it's deadly.

A naturally occurring process called hereth illint is what happens when a person must expel an animal's DNA due to being allergic. We learn about it in this book when Rachel has to expel a crocodile from herself after finding out she's allergic to crocodile DNA. This allergy issue never happens to her again or anyone else mentioned in the book series.
Awesome
It's amazing at least it has the story stuff like lingerie and such like metamorphic #2 i would still give that one 5 star tho
It is my sons favourite book series. This is the book for my son. I recommend it to every kid.
I totally forgot about Jonathan Taylor Thomas and tool time. If any kid reading this book is too young to know about that show I hope a parent will show them. It's so much funnier if you're in on the joke.
